had the best night last night. Got to see some family I have not seen in too long.

It’s amazing how seeing people again can really bring me back to re-evaluating what’s important.

Seeing my two God Daughter’s hanging around together playing happily was an enlightening experience. I will need to make more time for them. I will find a way.

On Saturday, I was given the honour of judging the Final of the Grumpy’s Songwriter Competition. It was a great night with 9 outstanding performer’s.

The jusdging became a little harder than I thought but I also learned a lot about me and my ability for music.

A great night had by all.

IMF warning

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week practically ordered the Australian banks to squirrel away billions of dollars in extra capital
reserves, to prepare for what one U.S. analyst called an impending “bloodbath” in the Australian property market.

The IMF was acknowledging two things: that Australia’s banks are dangerously exposed to property values; and those property values are wildly overvalued,
i.e. the market is a bubble.

In other words, Australia’s financial system is in exactly the same mess as those of Ireland and Spain before their banks blew out under their debt
burdens.

Petrified bankers

An even more telling insight into the state of the banks came from a chorus of bankers themselves this week, in the lead-up to the monthly Reserve Bank
meeting on interest rates.
“Bank bashers ‘risk economy’” accused a headline in The Australian on 30^th January, summing up the message of bankers such as former NAB CEO Don Argus, current NAB chairman Michael Chaney, and Future Fund chairman and former CBA boss David Murray.
The bankers are anticipating that the Big Four banks will almost definitely not pass on in full any RBA interest rate cuts for the foreseeable future, and are
hyperventilating to pre-emptively defend them, in a backhanded admission that if the banks behave as nicely as the public might expect, they will go bust.

In the current monetarist financial system, that is absolutely true.
The reason why is that the government-guaranteed loans taken by Australia’s panicked banks (including the very desperate Macquarie Bank) at the height
of the “GFC” in late 2008, without which they would have been “insolvent sooner rather than later”, had maturities of three, four and five years.

The first of those, the three-year loans, fall due this year; by 2014 at least $65 billion in government-guaranteed loans must be repaid or refinanced.

Because the banks must refinance these loans without the government guarantee, which expired (the government must now wish they hadn’t believed
their own propaganda about the crisis being over), the refinancing on the banks’ own double-A credit rating, rather than the government’s triple-A rating, is much more expensive. In fact, the interest rate they’ll have to pay to roll over is almost double what they paid under government guarantee. For that reason, the banks are determined not to pass on any RBA rate cuts in full.

Weighing in to also lobby for the banks under the headline “Bashing the banks could end up bashing you”, Murdoch finance spruiker Terry McCrann revealed in Melbourne’s 31^st January Herald Sun that the CBA owes $631 billion. Roughly half of that is in the form of low-interest customer deposits, but the balance is in higher-interest loans, including from foreign investors, and it completely dwarfs the bank’s capital base of $37 billion.

Glass-Steagall

Citizens Electoral Council leader Craig Isherwood today noted that the panic about Australia’s banks is long overdue:

“For years the authorities have either been lying about our ‘sound’ banks, or in denial, but now reality is sinking in,” Isherwood said.

“The question is, what do we do about it? The Australian people must not allow the bankers and their agents in the major parties to dictate the response, or else the people will be slammed with austerity budget cuts to prop up the banks’ bad debts, just like we are witnessing in Europe.

“The only solution to the world banking crisis is Lyndon LaRouche’s call for a global Glass-Steagall: separate commercial banking from investment banking, and write off the trillions of dollars in gambling debt and derivatives obligations that are sinking the world economy.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s free trade policies have cost the jobs of hundreds of Toyota workers who live in her own electorate, and they will shut
down the whole car industry unless her government re-enacts tariff protection for Australian manufacturing, Citizens Electoral Council leader Craig Isherwood
stated today.

“Australian industry is dying the death of a thousand cuts because the political leaders who say they support the car industry, really support the
very thing that is killing the car industry—free trade.”
“The car industry was developed under the stewardship of protectionist political leaders such as Labor’s Ben Chifley and the great Country Party Trade
and Industry Minister John ‘Black Jack’ McEwen, who turned Australia from an agrarian backwater into an industrial powerhouse,” he said. “Most importantly,
the car industry is the centre of our machine tool capacity; machine tools are the machines that make machines—it is our machine tools that give us the
ability to make things, anything. Beginning in the late 1960s our machine tool manufacturing was destroyed by free trade. What machine tool capacity we have
left is concentrated in the car industry—lose the industry, and we might as well suck our thumbs.”
Isherwood said the car industry, and all Australian manufacturing, was the victim of a deliberate plot to strip Australia of its industries and sovereignty.

“Free trade was invented by the elites who ran the British Empire precisely to crush any moves toward national economic development in the colonies they
ruled.

“No nation has ever developed under free trade,” he insisted. “The great industrial economies of the world—the U.S., Germany, Japan, and even Australia
before the Hawke-Keating carnage—all developed under heavy tariff protection. Abraham Lincoln spent his entire political life fighting against free trade,
whilst championing tariffs. In the Civil War, the British Empire sided with the free trade, slavery-based Confederacy, and orchestrated Lincoln’s
assassination, but not before his protectionist policies launched America on the greatest burst of economic development in the history of the world,
characterised by a surge in the size and living standard of its population.

“Australians who were inspired by Lincoln’s America, and who aspired to have a sovereign nation, knew we had to have tariffs to develop our own industries,
or we’d forever remain a colonial quarry to be looted by British financial speculators.”

Isherwood cited the 1929 Tariff Board’s “Brigden Report”, entitled, The Australian Tariff: An Economic Enquiry, which examined Australia’s prospects under protectionism vs. free trade, and found that free trade would limit Australia to being a raw materials economy, and substantially restrict its population growth. This report influenced the protectionist commitment of one of Australia’s greatest champions of manufacturing, John McEwen, whose adviser in the 1950s, Jack Campbell, summarised Brigden’s findings on the impact of free trade:

“Australia would be a country where there would be a handful of people—I think they said 5 millions—and they would grow wool and beef and mine lead. There would be no manufacturing industry and the maximum the country could support would be 5 million who would live at an extraordinarily high level of average income because they were the world’s best at it. Those who were lucky to have a slice of it would do tremendously well.” The Brigden Committee rejected free trade and recommended protectionist measures, and under the protectionist policies of the Curtin-Chifley Labor government in WWII, and continued by John McEwen in the 1950s and 1960s, Australia’s industries flourished.

Isherwood continued, “When Hawke, Keating, Howard, John Hewson, Ross Garnaut, Bernie Fraser and Macquarie Bank conspired to float the dollar,
deregulate banks and slash tariffs, they knew they would destroy Australia’s manufacturing industries, including the car industry—that was their
intention.

“Consequently, the situation that now confronts the car industry is clear-cut: it is doomed, unless the Gillard government denounces this free trade treachery, and goes back to tariffs. Otherwise, Gillard may say she’s sympathetic to the hundreds of sacked Toyota workers who live in her electorate, but she’s lying.”

He concluded, “I know Australians hate losing their industries, but they can’t get demoralised and accept it as inevitable. Our nation won’t survive if
this continues, so if you don’t like it, join the CEC and fight it.”

The Extinction of Empire. (Video)

Released on 26^th January by the LaRouche Political Action Committee in the United States, statesman and physical economist Lyndon LaRouche and his scientific “Basement Team” present the evidence of the last 500 million years of life on earth: that mankind—like all species which ever came before him—can only survive by increasing its “energy-flux density”. (As happened with the development of new, more energy-dense powers of photosynthesis in newly-evolving plant species, for instance, upon which new, more highly-developed forms of animals then fed.)

By contrast, any plant or animal species—such as the dinosaurs—which were not able to increase their “command over nature” in that fashion, simply disappeared in mass extinction events, and were replaced by entire new species which did embody such an upward, rigorously-demonstrable evolutionary shift in
energy-flux density.

Today, such an upward evolutionary shift for mankind means mastering and deploying fission and fusion power on a mass scale; developing even higher
forms of energy production such as matter-antimatter reactions; and re-launching a great program in space colonisation (beginning with colonising
the Moon and Mars) which alone can secure human existence in a solar system otherwise now threatened by major shifts in the cosmic radiation and other
galactic processes which have unleashed the recent extreme changes in weather over the past year or so—including the devastating density of earthquakes,
tsunamis, etc.

Unlike animals, we human beings each possess unique creative powers of mind. We therefore either utilize these uniquely human creative powers to develop our
command over nature through new scientific and technological breakthroughs, or we will almost assuredly suffer a mass extinction event—one way or the
other—just as almost all of the millions of plant and animal species before us have suffered repeatedly over the last 500 million years of the known
geological history of the earth. The animals had no choice; we humans do, but only if we rid humanity of the grim reaper of the British Crown’s Green
Fascism, in favor of real science.

The ongoing cover-up of the actual bankruptcy of Australia’s major banks and financial institutions, by the regulators who are supposed to police those institutions, is a crime that must be stopped now, Citizens Electoral Council leader Craig Isherwood said today.

Isherwood was responding to the revelation that Australia’s bank regulator, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), had refused a Sydney Morning Herald FOI (Freedom of Information) request to release its “risk registers” of Australia’s leading financial institutions.

The 27^th December Sydney Morning Herald reported that APRA’s general counsel, Warren Scott, advised against the release on the grounds that releasing the information “may affect the stability of Australia’s economy”.

Isherwood accused APRA, the banks and the government of colluding to keep the public ignorant of the true state of Australia’s supposedly “sound” financial system.

“The APRA revelations are no surprise to the CEC, because for close to two decades we have known and reported that Australia’s banks are bankrupt,” he said.

“APRA’s behavior is an insight into how desperate the government, the banks and the regulators are to keep the truth from the public.”

Isherwood recounted how Australia’s other regulator, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), in 2005 threatened the CEC when its June 2005 New Citizen newspaper headlined “Mother of All Bubbles” reported how heavily Australia’s banks were exposed to dangerous derivatives financial instruments—the very derivatives that later bankrupted Lehman Brothers and blew out the global financial system.

ASIC threatened to charge the CEC’s directors for giving financial advice without a licence.

Isherwood continued, “ASIC—the same regulator that later let the Commonwealth Bank and Storm Financial prey on vulnerable people and destroy their lives—threatened the CEC for showing the banks were in trouble in 2005, yet, criminally, the Sydney Morning Herald FOI request revealed that APRA didn’t compile risk registers on the banks until after the GFC erupted in September 2008.

“The CEC’s case proves the regulators were well and truly warned in advance. And they shouldn’t try to hide behind the bureaucratic excuse that ASIC and APRA are different agencies—the CEC distributed 300,000 copies of that same New Citizen exposé nation-wide.”

The issue, Isherwood said, is that since the globalisation “reforms” of Hawke and Keating, the Australian financial system has been exposed to the same legalised stealing by banks that has bankrupted the rest of the world, but the government, regulators and banks are trying to cover up the fact that Australia is in the same mess.

He said, “Instead of admitting the problem, the government is desperate to stick with the policies that caused it, because those policies give their financial masters in the City of London banking system the power to dictate to nations.

“The major parties are not screaming about this, because they are no more than lobbyists for the financial interests of the private banks; instead of protecting the people, they are sacrificing the people to maintain the power of the banks.

“The CEC is the only institution in Australia with credibility on the financial system, because all along our sole concern has been to return to the kind of financial system that served Australia so well during WWII, when the Commonwealth Bank—our national bank—directed the banking system to serve the needs of the nation and the people.”

Isherwood concluded, “It’s time to stop covering up the banking crisis, and address it. The CEC would put the entire financial system into receivership to sort out the bankruptcy, and establish a Pecora Commission to clean out the corruption between the banks, regulators and government.

“Most importantly, the CEC would establish a new national bank that can direct as much credit as the nation needs to put everybody into productive work, building infrastructure, and creating high-skilled jobs in expanded agriculture and manufacturing industries. There’s no limit to the amount of credit a national bank could issue, if we have the manpower and materials to put to work.”

NASA’s Voyager probes are truly going where no one has gone before. Gliding silently toward the stars, 9 billion miles from Earth, they are beaming back news from the most distant, unexplored reaches of the solar system.

Mission scientists say the probes have just sent back some very big news indeed.

It’s bubbly out there.

Credit: NASA According to computer models, the bubbles are large, about 100 million miles wide, so it would take the speedy probes weeks to cross just one of them. Voyager 1 entered the “foam-zone” around 2007, and Voyager 2 followed about a year later. At first researchers didn’t understand what the Voyagers were sensing–but now they have a good idea.

“The sun’s magnetic field extends all the way to the edge of the solar system,” explains Opher. “Because the sun spins, its magnetic field becomes twisted and wrinkled, a bit like a ballerina’s skirt. Far, far away from the sun, where the Voyagers are now, the folds of the skirt bunch up.”

When a magnetic field gets severely folded like this, interesting things can happen. Lines of magnetic force criss-cross, and “reconnect”. (Magnetic reconnection is the same energetic process underlying solar flares.) The crowded folds of the skirt reorganize themselves, sometimes explosively, into foamy magnetic bubbles.

“We never expected to find such a foam at the edge of the solar system, but there it is!” says Opher’s colleague, University of Maryland physicist Jim Drake.

Theories dating back to the 1950s had predicted a very different scenario: The distant magnetic field of the sun was supposed to curve around in relatively graceful arcs, eventually folding back to rejoin the sun. The actual bubbles appear to be self-contained and substantially disconnected from the broader solar magnetic field.

Energetic particle sensor readings suggest that the Voyagers are occasionally dipping in and out of the foam—so there might be regions where the old ideas still hold. But there is no question that old models alone cannot explain what the Voyagers have found.

Says Drake: “We are still trying to wrap our minds around the implications of these findings.”

The structure of the sun’s distant magnetic field—foam vs. no-foam—is of acute scientific importance because it defines how we interact with the rest of the galaxy. Researchers call the region where the Voyagers are now “the heliosheath.” It is essentially the border crossing between the Solar System and the rest of the Milky Way. Lots of things try to get across—interstellar clouds, knots of galactic magnetism, cosmic rays and so on. Will these intruders encounter a riot of bubbly magnetism (the new view) or graceful lines of magnetic force leading back to the sun (the old view)?

The case of cosmic rays is illustrative. Galactic cosmic rays are subatomic particles accelerated to near-light speed by distant black holes and supernova explosions. When these microscopic cannonballs try to enter the solar system, they have to fight through the sun’s magnetic field to reach the inner planets.

“The magnetic bubbles appear to be our first line of defense against cosmic rays,” points out Opher. “We haven’t figured out yet if this is a good thing or not.”

On one hand, the bubbles would seem to be a very porous shield, allowing many cosmic rays through the gaps. On the other hand, cosmic rays could get trapped inside the bubbles, which would make the froth a very good shield indeed.

So far, much of the evidence for the bubbles comes from the Voyager energetic particle and flow measurements. Proof can also be obtained from the Voyager magnetic field observations and some of this data is also very suggestive. However, because the magnetic field is so weak, the data takes much longer to analyze with the appropriate care. Thus, unraveling the magnetic signatures of bubbles in the Voyager data is ongoing.

“We’ll probably discover which is correct as the Voyagers proceed deeper into the froth and learn more about its organization,” says Opher. “This is just the beginning, and I predict more surprises ahead.”

LaRouche: Cancel the British imperial food control laws—boost food production!

The following emergency statement on food production was issued yesterday by the Lyndon LaRouche Political Action Committee.

“What you have to do to solve the food problem is very simple: You have to eliminate the British-centered control, over food production and distribution.” Lyndon LaRouche said this Wednesday, in the LPACTV Weekly Report, referring to the present agriculture production breakdown and worsening food shortages. “If you just take those laws that are on the books now, cancel them! And you automatically will have a surge in food production.”

The set of U.S. laws suppressing food production, ruining family farming, and creating shortages and conditions for famine, include these major acts: the treaty-membership in the World Trade Organization (begun in 1995); the 2005 Federal mandate for bio-fuels; the 1970 Plant Variety Protection Act (allowing private patenting of plant improvements), among others. The impact of these is augmented by the non-enforcement of anti-trust laws; as well as the 1999 elimination of the Glass-Steagall Act, and the funding cuts in NASA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, and other programs to promote discoveries and enhance Earth resources for agriculture.

Look at a few snapshots of today’s farm chaos and food shortages in terms of impact of allowing these laws to remain in effect.

—World Trade Organisation —

The WTO impact is conveyed in the 1988 slogan: “One World, One Market” of the Montreal summit of its predecessor, the UN General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, Agriculture Round, out of which the WTO was formed.

* The U.S. and all member nations agree to eliminate food reserves, tariffs on food imports and exports, and similar food-security measures, under the imperial rationalization that these are “trade distorting.” The U.S. no longer keeps any food in reserve in its Commodity Credit Corporation system, still on the books, but empty.

In turn, trade and food processing have come to be monopolized by a tight set of cartel companies, dominating international food flows, and even domestic trade in many nations.

A handful of companies dominates over 80 percent of grains traded worldwide: Cargill, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus, ADM, and a few others. The last vestiges of national-interest institutions, serving farmers and/or consumers, have been taken down. In Australia, in the last two years, Cargill took over the wheat marketing system of the Australian Wheat Board, the once nation-serving facility, set up to represent farmers. In Canada, as of Aug. 1, 2012, the Canadian Wheat Board is to be shut down on orders of the Federal government. In Canada right now, only four companies control 72 percent of all the grain elevators.

* The U.S. and all member nations agree to respect the unlawful rights of a handful of agro-chemical companies to declare patent rights and issue demands for license-fees over crop seeds. The WTO enforces this under its “intellectual property rights” rules. The U.S.—where patenting food seeds was never permitted—passed insane laws to approve it, beginning with the Plant Variety Protection Act of 1970.

Monsanto/Cargill, BASF, Syngenta, DuPont/Pioneer, Dow, Bayer CropScience, now exert monopoly control over supplies of high-yielding, genetically-modified corn, soy, and other seed supplies. The cartel controls and degrades plantlife research.

For example, thanks to these cartel companies—interlocked with British Empire financial and political power, decades went by without the development of reserve strains of wheat resistant to stem rust and other blights. Now, for example, the UG99 wheat rust—first appearing in Uganda in 1999, and now spread eastward as far as Iran, has no effective counter-strain to put in use. This is the purpose of the monopolistic seed system.

—Biofuels Mandate Law—

In the mid-2000s, the United States, nations of Europe, and other nations began passing insane laws to mandate the annual volume of fuel which must come from foodstocks diverted to fuel—corn-ethanol, soy-diesel, canola-diesel, wheat-ethanol, palm-diesel, etc. For example, in the United States, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (PL 109-58) set compulsory levels for annual biofuels.

In the U.S. at present, nearly 40 percent of the entire corn harvest is going into ethanol. For the week ending Dec. 2, an all-time record volume of corn ethanol was produced in the U.S.—a rate of 40.068 million gallons a day (954,000 barrels a day). Corn ethanol now accounts for about 11.5% of U.S. gasoline usage. The largest distillers include Cargill and ADM.

As LaRouche said Dec. 28, this system is genocide.

The escalating mobilisation of the LaRouche organisation across the planet to stop the British Empire’s drive for thermonuclear World War III, is beginning to penetrate all layers of the population and its institutions, and it is throwing a monkey wrench into the British gameplan. LaRouche’s leadership is giving others the courage, and understanding, to also stand up and fight.

Senior military and intelligence circles in the United States remain staunchly opposed to the idea of launching another war in the Middle East, and some are saying so openly. In early November, Gen. (ret.) Joseph Hoar used an interview with EIR to warn of the grave war danger. And on 22nd December, Col. (ret.) Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell, granted an exclusive interview to EIR’s Jeffrey Steinberg, in which he said there was no basis for a war against Iran, and stated that President Barack Obama had indeed committed impeachable offenses.

The Russian government of Putin and Medvedev is also sticking to its forceful war-avoidance policy, warning at every opportunity about the extreme dangers of the ballistic missile defence policy of the Obama government, as well as the deadly drive to war in Syria, Iran, and elsewhere—“the tendency for military intervention in critical situations”, as a joint statement of the Russian-led military alliance, Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) stated earlier this week.

But the critical point, which LaRouche alone has made, is that the global war danger is coming strictly from the British Empire, and the unquenchable drive of the oligarchical principle it embodies to depopulate the planet. The British Empire cannot not have a war, LaRouche has stressed. They have been bankrupt since 2007, and they have embarked on a demented hyperinflationary bailout binge ever since, as this week’s 500 billion euro mega-bailout by the ECB only underscores.

The British Empire, LaRouche has explained, has the ability to trump internal resistance to their war policy in both the U.S. and Israel, which is why he has insisted that the only durable war-avoidance option is to dump President Obama. Only in that way, can we remove British control over the U.S. thermonuclear trigger.

The Russian government of Putin and Medvedev is also sticking to its forceful war-avoidance policy, warning at every opportunity about the extreme dangers of the ballistic missile defence policy of the Obama government, as well as the deadly drive to war in Syria, Iran, and elsewhere—“the tendency for military intervention in critical situations”, as a joint statement of the Russian-led military alliance, Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) stated earlier this week.

But the critical point, which LaRouche alone has made, is that the global war danger is coming strictly from the British Empire, and the unquenchable drive of the oligarchical principle it embodies to depopulate the planet. The British Empire cannot not have a war, LaRouche has stressed. They have been bankrupt since 2007, and they have embarked on a demented hyperinflationary bailout binge ever since, as this week’s 500 billion euro mega-bailout by the ECB only underscores.

The British Empire, LaRouche has explained, has the ability to trump internal resistance to their war policy in both the U.S. and Israel, which is why he has insisted that the only durable war-avoidance option is to dump President Obama. Only in that way, can we remove British control over the U.S. thermonuclear trigger.

Putin has done much to reassert Russia’s sovereignty;
So far in his career, Putin has:
- reached out to Asia for collaboration on economic development
- opposed the British and neo-conservative war-mongering in the Middle East
(which has ensnared and drained the U.S. for a decade)

Far from ending America’s war foolishness as he promised, “British agent” Obama has launched a murder-spree against U.S. citizens and foreign heads of state, and is now beating the drums for attacks on Syria and Iran.

****THIS WILL FORCE A CONFRONTATION WITH RUSSIA AND CHINA****,

There is potential for this to escalate into thermonuclear war, as leading U.S. and Russian military figures have recently warned, along with U.S. statesman Lyndon LaRouche.
Those war-avoidance efforts were set back last week, when Hillary Clinton gave Putin a very undiplomatic tongue-lashing over the Duma (parliament) elections.

Now, qualified sources in Washington and Moscow have provided new details to the LaRouche Political Action Committee (LPAC) about just how President Obama, in collusion with some of the worst enemies of Russia, set up Hillary Clinton and therefore set back U.S.-Russian relations and ongoing war avoidance efforts.

The incident provides one more unavoidable piece of evidence that President Obama is criminally insane and an agent of the British Empire faction promoting world war, and must be removed from office immediately.

According to the sources, in the weeks leading into the recent Russian Duma elections, former Soviet President and British agent Mikhail Gorbachev were in phone contact with:
- President Obama
- UN Ambassador Susan Rice
- The National Democratic Institute (NDI) Chairman and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Within hours of the Duma election results being announced, Gorbachev denounced the results and demanded new elections, triggering an international feeding frenzy against Putin and the United Russia party which he founded.

Through USAID and private European and American foundations, millions of dollars had been poured into Russia to promote the opposition;

USAID Chief Operating Officer Sean Carroll himself had come to the agency from the Club of Madrid
(an organisation of former heads of state in which Gorbachev plays a leading role).

Next, President Obama ordered Secretary of State Clinton to issue a harsh condemnation of the Russian elections—before she had any opportunity to speak with her counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Naturally, the Russians responded with a criticism of Clinton for jumping the gun and issuing statements before any of the election monitors had even filed their reports.

President Obama then reportedly contacted Secretary Clinton a second time, chastising her for being too soft, and demanding an even more outrageous statement from her.
The clear intent was to break a level of trust and candor that had been carefully developed by Secretary Clinton with Lavrov and other Russian leaders over the past three years.
Fortunately, LaRouche’s exposé of this plot, “Was It Hillary’s Error?” had been released and widely circulated internationally, thus undermining the British scheme to break one key U.S.-Russian war avoidance channel.

OBAMA & GORBACHEV

- Obama’s personal ties to Gorbachev go back at least to 20th March 2009, when President Obama “walked in” on a scheduled meeting between Gorbachev and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House.

- On 7th July 2009, during his visit to Moscow, President Obama again met with Gorbachev face-to-face and sought his input into a major speech he was scheduled to give at a Moscow university.
